I could tell you a story about the many lives that your donation will touch. I could tell you a story about how it will make a difference. I could tell you a story about our endless gratitude for your support. These are all true stories, but not the one’s we will tell you today. Today, we’re going to tell you about Firefighter Kory Rycroft.
This story is about kindness. It is about love. It is about a young man, that was taken from us too soon, for reasons we cannot understand.
Kory was a rare gem. He did many things, but in all things, he exercised kindness. It would be unfair of us to attempt to summarize the effect that he had on people, as he possessed the ability to bring exactly what was needed, to every situation. Whether it was laughter, a hug, or an impromptu dance lesson, Kory was there.
As a firefighter, he got to live out his dream of following in the footsteps of his father, and grandfather. He understood the importance of community, and would put in many a hard days work, with the sweat of his brow as his only reward.
In May of 2016, Kory proudly climbed the Bow Tower with his fellow firefighters. Now, there is a strange, yet wonderous tradition at the Beaverlodge Fire Department, that involves mustard. In keeping with tradition, Kory volunteered to carry a small container of mustard, to the top of the Bow Tower. In fact, if you look at Kory’s race bib, it even says “I’m climbing for The Mustard”.
However, the mustard never made it to the top of the Bow Tower, as it sat curbside in Kory’s gear bag; only to be discovered missing, upon his arrival at the top.
It saddens us to say, that Kory passed away in December of 2016. He is immensely missed by all of us. But we won’t let his legacy of kindness end here. We intend to climb the Bow Tower in his honour, and raise money for Wellspring, so that he may continue to help others in their time of need.
We still have that 225ml bottle of French’s Classic Yellow, and yes, it will be coming with us to Calgary on May 7th. So please donate, if you can. If you can’t, please offer up a random act of kindness to someone. If anyone asks you why, tell them it’s from Kory John Rycroft.
