My name is Kevin Buchanan and I am a Volunteer Firefighter/EMR with the Lake Louise Fire Department and this is my 2nd Stairclimb challenge.
My mother was diagnosed with breast cancer and passed away August 18, 2010 in her 61st year. She battled cancer for 9-1/2 years and was given a low percentage to survive past 5yrs as it was a very aggressive cancer.
My mother — being the warrior she was — never gave up, no matter how hard things got. No matter the good news or the bad news. She would always set goals and she achieved each one of them.
It is hard to fathom how anyone can deal with their own mortality and still be a rock for your entire family. Supporting each of us and everything that we do. Never asking for anything and never stopping to let life just pass her by. Never did I see my mother give up her courageous fight. She has instilled in me a courage to take on anything life throws at me and to be a protective soul of all around me. My mother was a big part of Hospice Peterborough and she even took part in the 1st ever hike for hospice which raises funds and awareness for cancer. My family takes part every year including this year, and I have missed many due to living in Alberta. This Stairclimb is my way of raising awareness and funds to support those families affected by cancer.
We are all touched by cancer in our life whether it is a family member or a friend. I feel honored to be a part of this and to have my mother on my shoulder guiding me, encouraging me and protecting me each and every day. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to honour my mother and to honour Sharon Melee this May 7th.
My Mother’s Favourite saying:
Yesterday is history
Tomorrow is a mystery
Today is a gift, that is why they call it the present
