Ryan Kaiser is a 24-year firefighter, and a 10-year Wellspring stairclimb champion. When it comes to helping others – Ryan is all in.

“A bit of discomfort and pain to climb a few hundred stairs … I’ll do it every year that I am able to if it means that someone out there will benefit from Wellspring’s resources. People need to know that they are not going through cancer alone,” said Ryan.

Last year and this year, Ryan has been inspired to climb for a young girl living with cancer in his community of Okotoks.

“She just around 12 this year, the same age as my boy, so it hits close to home,” he said, adding, “It’s very motivating to climb in her name,” he said.

Ryan says the family of the young girl learned about Wellspring through the Stairclimb Challenge, and although Wellspring doesn’t offer programs for kids with cancer, he says the family has received caregiving support and has accessed Wellspring resources.

“I am thankful to have the opportunity to do this climb and bring awareness to the organization. Wellspring offers a wealth of resources,” he said.

On Sunday, Ryan will tackle the stairs with teammates from Okotoks Fire and Rescue, and with support and encouragement from his son and his parents – his dad a retired firefighter.

“My goal is to do better than last year and keep improving myself,” he said. “It will be a good day. I am looking forward to it.”
