While I was six years old, my father was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia. In the late stages, he was lucky enough to live, however, both his parents (my grandparents) weren’t as lucky. They both received a cancer diagnosis closer to their passing and didn’t make it.

I also have a cousin who received a cancer diagnosis as well and, similar to my father, managed to pull through.

I have many more friends and family who have suffered the same. This year, I am climbing in remembrance of those whom I’ve lost and to honour those who persevered.

Cancer is something anyone can get, it doesn’t just destroy the person with it, but the friends and family who surround them.
